The Declaration of Arbroath is a letter written in 1320 by Scottish nobles representing the people of Scotland. Addressed to the Pope at the time, it consisted of a response to the excommunication of King Robert I (also known as Robert the Bruce).
The nobles used the Declaration of Arbroath to declare the independence of Scotland from England, and any attempts by English kings to take control of the country. This document is very important to the history of Scotland as a nation, as it comes at the end of the Scottish Wars of Independence.
